North American sitcoms are a very different creation to our British ones. Over here, a series of 6 is considered more than adequate. In the USA it’s more like 30! This kind of high intensity makes for some competitive writing and one show that was at the top of its game for many years was that of Friends. The show features 6 friends living in New York. Ross, Monica, Joey, Rachel, Chandler and Pheobe kept us amused for ten years as we watched them start out as young 20-somethings in 1994 to their early thirties and the next stages of their lives with the shows end in 2004. The shows enduring popularity has given it something of a timeless appeal. It is one of most streamed shows still on Netflix, so much so that they have had to keep buying it. plus it regularly turns up on E4 and Comedy Central. You still need decent aerial for many of these stations and a TV Aerial Installation Cardiff company can make sure this happens. When the show ended a sudden vacuum was needed to be filled. What would take its place? Warner Brothers asked.
What has replaced it was the Big Bang Theory. This features 4 scientist “nerds” who cannot find girlfriends, although in Sheldon’s case this is more by choice. As the series progressed the chasing of Penny by Leonard, Wolwitz’s chase of any woman he could find, Raj’s inability to speak to women unless drunk and Sheldon’s complete lack of interest has been slowly eroded away so that it was being set up to be the new Friends. It has even blatantly stole storylines from the first show.
As with Friends the cost of paying the cast was becoming prohibitive and with this move towards a more Friends based scenario, coupled with the fact that the cast were getting over and closer to 40, it meant that it came to an end.« Back
