When working from home, the risk does increase of confidential information making its way into the wrong hands. This is why it is even more important for both employers and employees to ensure that they have a system for dealing with confidential information, and that the employee is perfectly clear what the rules are and what is expected of them to ensure that information is kept safe.

For both electronically stored data and paper documents, it is important that it is destroyed when it is no longer needed using a confidential shredding service. Also, when travelling between home and the office, laptops and other items containing confidential information should never be left unattended such as in cars for example.

It is also important that employees have a suitable space to work that other members of the employee’s household cannot access when confidential information can be seen or accessed. Using strong passwords to protect confidential data stored on a computer, as well as a lockable filing cabinet are two ways that you can ensure the information is kept in a protected way.

It is important to ensure that employees understand how serious an offence it is to allow access to confidential information to other people, which may result in disciplinary action if rules are not followed.
