There are two main techniques used in stabilising hazardous waste. The first is the mechanical method of handling such waste. This involves excavating very large amounts of waste over a long period, so that the soil density is increased. This process requires high amounts of manpower and other resources, which is often not available in rural areas. Another technique used for stabilising hazardous waste is the biological method, through which harmful bacteria are introduced into the soil, making the environment safe for living. These harmful organisms are naturally present in the soil, but when they are introduced as a remedy to stabilize dangerous soil, the effects are not at all beneficial.

In fact, biodegradable substances can be used as an alternative to other synthetic mulches, because they do not cause any damage to the soil or any other living organism existing in it. Soil that has been adequately stabilised can then be used for agricultural purposes like growing plants, livestock grazing, etc. Thus, utilising soil for various applications has become extremely beneficial, especially in the agricultural sector.
