Maintenance issues like a dripping tap can add higher bills at a time when many finances are already squeezed. With inflation and household bills rising, few can afford to let these issues go unfixed.
It’s also wasteful of a precious resource when many are keen to lessen their impact on the environment. The Royal Horticultural Society has identified conserving water as the key to a greener garden. So here are some tips when thinking about fixing a dripping tap.
Identify the cause
What is the cause of the drip? Is it an old washer that needs replacing, or something more serious?
Old or damaged pipes and drains can also lead to dripping, and in this case, it’s best to call in the professionals. They can offer solutions like pipe replacement or drain lining. When considering drain lining Oldbury, you should seek expert advice from a specialist such as www.wilkinson-env.co.uk/sewer-repairs-drain-lining-concrete-cutting/drain-repairs/drain-repairs-oldbury/ who can identify the issue and talk you through the options.
Replacing a washer
Once you have ruled out anything serious, an old washer is the most common cause of dripping taps. To replace a washer, you will need a spanner, a screwdriver, a new washer or tap and some plumber’s tape.
1. Turn off the mains water supply. This will stop you from getting wet! Open the tap to let out any remaining water.
2. Remove the valve head. This is the big hexagon nut at the base of the tap handle. Use a spanner and unscrew the nut until the tap head screws off.
3. Find the washer and replace it. Once the valve head is off, find the washer at the end of the valve. Use your screwdriver to remove the old washer. Replace with a new washer.
4. Tighten everything up and turn the mains back on. Reverse your steps with your adjustable spanner by winding your plumber’s tape around the threads of the tap, then put the valve back on. Tighten everything up and turn your mains water back on.
If the dripping has stopped, you’ve fixed your tap!
